Mazda RX-8 PZ Review

It's fair to say Mazda's RX-8 has been a success having sold over 17,000 in the UK alone. While not everyone might not grasp the concept of a rotary engine that pulls to nearly 10,000 rpm, the RX-8 looks superb and ticked a lot of boxes for style and functionality thanks to Mazda's ingenious 4 door coupe design revealing very useable rear seating too.

Three years on and it's time for a limited edition in the shape of the RX-8 PZ. Prodrive - the P in the PZ - were tasked with improving the handling, to reduce body roll, pitch and increase feedback on the 231ps RX-8. Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs running 15mm lower were specified by Prodrive with an altered bump-stop. The drop in ride height not only helps the RX-8 PZ look better over it's new 18in dark silver OZ alloy wheels but has produced a firmer ride and flatter cornering. The RX-8 no longer wallows and feels keen and responsive on turn in, coupled with more weight and feel through the steering wheel. An upgraded rear silencer provides the PZ with a sportier engine note, but unfortunately no more power, as such the Mazda RX-8 PZ performance matches the standard 231ps model, with a 0-62mph time of 6.4 seconds and a 146mph top speed.

On the outside the RX-8 PZ gains a Prodrive developed rear spoiler which saw wind tunnel testing to achieve down-force and high-speed stability. Black mesh grilles are fitted to the outer and central front air intakes and to the rear bumper vent. Lower-drag door mirrors also feature.

Prodrive have certainly improved the driving experience of what was already a capable chassis and have added to the looks with the menacing dark alloys and mesh. It's unfortunate that there is no power increase, but for a £1,400 premium over a standard high power RX-8 the £25,995 RX-8 PZ is great package.
